Neck & Back Pain Q & A

What causes neck pain?

Your neck (cervical spine) is a complex structure of nerves, bones, and joints surrounded by supportive muscles and ligaments in both your neck and shoulders. There are many issues which may cause neck discomfort.

Neck pain may be the result of an injury sustained in an auto accident, a slip and fall on an uneven or wet surface, or other trauma. The injury may strain or pull muscles and tendons or irritate one or more of the many nerves that run through your cervical spine.

Cervical spine pain may also occur when you have an underlying disorder such as osteoarthritis, which causes degenerative changes in the joints in your spine. Poor posture is also another common cause of neck pain.

Dr. Clerge-Leger can often determine what may be causing your pain by evaluating the characteristics of your discomfort. For instance, your pain may occur as:

  • A stiff neck that makes it hard to turn your head
  • Soreness or tenderness through the neck area and upper shoulders
  • A specific point of sharp, stabbing pain
  • Pain that travels down the shoulders to the arms and hands or upward into the head

What causes back pain?

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people cite for seeing a doctor. It’s so common, in fact, that most people can expect to experience at least one episode of back pain in their lifetimes.

The causes of back pain are as varied as the people who experience it and may include:

  • Muscular strain caused by heavy lifting, inappropriate lifting techniques, or traumatic injury
  • Degenerative changes in the spine causing conditions that irritate spinal nerves
  • Sciatica caused by disc herniation in the lumbar spine
  • Misalignment of the spinal structures which lead to muscular strain and nerve irritation
